Observation notes: I believe this is likely to be a Small Magpie moth Anania hortulataSize
approx 1-5 - 2.0 cm width at rest; Originally I thought possibly a checkered skipper - but which? The species for the Montreal area do not excatly match the wing pattern and are generally darker. I was also puzzled by the orange colour of the thorax and head.
