Observation date: June 08, 2015
Submitted by: John Many Wings
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Weather: Temp 74, Partly Cloudy, High thin clouds, Light breeze.
Activity: Morning after a relatively cool night, so the butterfly kept its wings open or partially so. The ID is difficult and may be wrong, I have seen Hackberry Emperors in this area last year. A specimen image that is similar to this one is at: http://butterfliesofamerica.com/imagehtmls/Nymphalidae/Asterocampa_c._clyton-LECTOTYPE_F_of_Clyton_ocellata-USA_KANSAS-CMNH-2_i.htm
However, there are some differences in the patterns on the wings. Note the light square with an inner dark ring around a light spot on the 6th cell postmedian area. Is it a variation? I don't find that on the specimen from the Butteflies of America Site.
