  Sighting 1046456

Observation date: June 03, 2015
Submitted by: kayleehill
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Was being attacked by ants. It was not near a tree, but by the house in tall grass.
Status: Resident
Verified by: stomlins701
Verified date: June 03, 2015
Coordinator notes: Given that it was found in grasses (the oak leaves in the photo initially misguided me), I believe this is a moth caterpillar of the Adjutant Wainscot, Leucania adjuta, based on a near perfect comparison with a photo in Wagner and others "Owlet Caterpillars of Eastern North America" (2011), p.506. That text lists the foodplant as grasses. Photos on the internet (bugguide.net) of this caterpillar seem washed out by flash, so do not provide as good a comparison. SAT
