Appalachian Brown
Satyrodes appalachia

Observation date: May 25, 2015
Submitted by: lmreid71
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I was walking a wooded trail near our house with my kids and came across this large brown butterfly. I was able to get 1 shot with my cell phone. It was flitting around along a very small creek that runs between 2 ponds., occasionally landing on leaves along the trail. Larger than a Carolina Satyr, a bit smaller than a Common Wood-Nymph. The weather was very overcast and it was beginning to rain. The 2 photos are of the same individual, one taken with my phone, the other with my Canon 5D Mark III.
