Modest sphinx
Pachysphinx modesta

Observation date: May 29, 2012
Submitted by: nimmohomeschool
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found this moth in my neighbors yard. It was flapping about on the ground and from a distance, I thought it might be a hummingbird (though we don't see those very often in this area) When I walked up to it I noticed it was a very large moth (like the white-lined sphinx that we occasionally see at sunset). This all happened at about 6:00pm on a partly cloudy evening 65 degrees outside. The moth seems to be injured somehow but I can't exactly figure out where. It's flapping a lot but never really leaves the ground. The end of it's abdomen is quite blunt and looks "open". When it moves about, the abdomen tends to curl to one side. It doesn't seem to be able to walk straight at all and appears to be rather agitated and frantic whenever it moves around.
