Observation notes: On a sunny, cool morning, I was hiking a hillside trail along the north edge of Griffith Park in Los Angeles. I chased this medium sized yellow butterfly, attempting to get a photo, but it refused to settle down. A poor shot was the best I could do, as it briefly hovered over what appeared to be telegraphweed. Ventral forewing and hindwing mainly yellow with faint markings, but the dorsal wings showed distinct thick black borders along the outer margins. There also seemed to be a large dark area in the basal wing, closest to the thorax. This was revealed mainly by sunlight through the wing and was not clearly seen.
