Observation notes: Basking in the backyard sprinkler spray. I really struggle with Duskywings. Because of the gray fringes, pale tan-ish spots on the lower wing, and bold patterning on the forewing, including a row of small glassy spots on the upper wing and one at the tip of the cell, I'm going to go with a female Rocky Mountain Duskywing. Range rules out Juvenal's, though that was my second choice looking at the physical features.

Coordinator notes: Duskywings always challenge all of us, but you did the work and almost got it. New Mexico's eastern plains are a stronghold for Horace's so keep that in mind next time you are out on the oaky grasslands. it does share some features with Rocky Mountain, but that latter one usually has a conspicuous gray overscaling on the dorsal forewing, which is missing on yours and on horatius. Horace's flies again in mid-summer and that brood looks a little different . . .
