Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Pupa, likely a queen, attached to the underside of a Johnsongrass leaf on a plant arching over whorled milkweed flowers and fruits. This stand included southern cattail and three-square bulrush growing on the bank of the Rio Grande. The butterfly within appears to be a queen which emerged, unobserved, within two hours later. (Image #6 is of this pupa 24 hours earlier, for comparison.) The morning was warm, windy, and under full sunshine.
