Tawny Emperor
Asterocampa clyton

Observation date: August 19, 2016
Date notes: Took photo of it dead posted 19 Aug 2016 on my Facebook. Looks like Asterocampa leilia, except out of range and dark top back wing. There are several butterfly raising places and companies in Indianapolis, including Garfield Park and the Children's Museum--both within 3 miles of here. It may be an escapee.

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Was sitting with wings spread on a yew bush on the property of the Indianapolis-Marion County Library Central Library Location on Saint Clair Street downtown. The bushes are on the north side of the building towards an apartment complex and 9th St. As it was still there when I left the library, I brought it home so have the body (not mounted) and the photos I took living and dead.

Coordinator notes: The two solid black bars in discal area of forewing make clyton (Tawny Emperor) a sure bet. Leilia is far out of range but A. clyton is quite common in Indiana.
