Observation notes: Multiple photos of two Eastern Tailed-blues mating on a blade of crabgrass in an open prairie area in Lawrence, Kansas. Weather: approx. 75 degrees, low humidity, quite windy with gusts of wind up to 35 mph. At one point an "interloper" tries to break the two up, assuming so he could have his turn with the female. Mating continued entire time I was taking pictures (about 7-8 minutes, possibly longer after I moved on). Interloper moved short distance away; appeared to be "waiting". Size(s): .75–1"
