Observation notes: The caterpillar that became this adult was originally spotted on the Amaranth plant I grow for culinary purposes (either Amaranthus retroflexus or A. hypochondriacus)last summer (around august or september 2012). After two weeks of eating, I brought it inside where it spun a cocoon and underwent diapause as a caterpillar for the fall and winter months. I had just discovered that it had eclosed today. There is another individual that I brought in at the same time. It is still a caterpillar inside the cocoon but it is evident that it is in its prepupal stage. I have photos of the caterpillar and pupal stages if you would like to see those as well.
