California Sister
Adelpha californica

Observation date: August 03, 2011
Submitted by: rdcook
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny & warming to hot, probably 90f. Sighted at the very top of a bonsai Quercus lobata. It had been feeding but was lying along the central leaf rib with its mouth down at the leaf node. Looked to be snoozing or sunbathing It's been there for hours with no signs of moving any time soon. It is about 3" long and about as big around as a pencil. The body is smooth, leaf green with no markings. There are two pairs of horns on the head, four more pairs along the body and a much smaller pair right above the mouth. The horns are a rusty red-orange. The mouth seems large for the size of the critter and kind of looks like a burr got stuck to his face.

Coordinator notes: This is a California Sister, a species of butterfly. Oak is their host plant (plant the caterpillars feed on) and the picture is a good match for this species. -Josiah Gilbert
