Clouded Sulphur
Colias philodice

Observation date: July 08, 2023
Submitted by: Chet Gottfried
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: My working assumption was that the butterfly was another orange-sulphur; however, since there have been relatively few butterflies this year, I photographed it. The suphur was flighty, going from some plants to other plants (short flights, perhaps 20 feet or so). I was able to get a few photos, but now regret my not continuing to follow the sulphur. I did try working around the sulphur, but the angle is essentially the same in both photos. Once home, I realized the sulphur was different.

Coordinator notes: Nice photos. Philodice males on occasion have prominent pink edges. The give-away feature here are the very faint black dots on the ventral forewing in the post-median region.
