Common Sootywing
Pholisora catullus

Observation date: July 22, 2022
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This looks somewhat similar to the Common Roadside-skipper I saw a few months ago, but am I correct in thinking this is the Common Sootywing due to the series of small white dots? (vs the white patch that was in the roadside skipper I saw?)
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: You are "correct in thinking this is the Common Sootywing." We have two in Colorado, catullus and mejicanus. Mejicanus is a little smaller but you almost need to catch it to identify...it has black-lined veins on the underside of the hindwings which you will probably never get a photograph of...found in southern Colorado south of Monument Divide in weedy locations of foothills....and a really fast flyer!
