Banded Hairstreak
Satyrium calanus

Observation date: April 11, 2020
Submitted by: oceanicwilderness
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I was weeding our flower bed and noticed a butterfly drop down from a basket grass leaf I had just disturbed. At first I thought it was a gray hairstreak but noticed it was quite tiny and not moving much. I grabbed my phone because it was so docile and took several photos, I figure it may have just eclosed--did not find a chrysalis. Upon closer look it was definitely not one I was familiar with and so I grabbed my butterfly book and iNaturalist to compare. Butterfly rested on my Carolina ruellia for more than an hour. Finally flew away sometime past noon.
