Polyphemus moth
Antheraea polyphemus

Observation date: February 07, 2016
Date notes: This little guy (or girl, I should say) probably cocooned around mid-last-October, if I had to guess. I just found her late.

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: First found as a cocoon in an oak tree on a low branch (~7 feet high), wrapped in dead leaves and bundled together. The actual pupa was removed from the cocoon carefully and was determined to be a female. 3/21/16: The moth emerged today. Very pretty in color, definitely on the more mild side; not as dark or contrasting as I've seen in most pictures (this is my first individual I've seen in person). Unfortunately, the weather has not been very pleasant for the past day or so, which complicates her finding a mate; I'll keep her for the next few days when it's predicted to be a little warmer and less rainy so that she can hopefully call successfully.
