Date notes: We found three caterpillars in the grass on the playground.. the next day one spun cocoon and then the 2nd day they other 2 spun cocoon

Observation notes: We are a preschool classroom studying caterpillars and student are 4 years old so excited to find out what species it is so we can study it! If you have any info resources for preschoolers that would be great!!!!

Coordinator notes: This is a southern migrant species that most frequently arrives in Pennsylvania in late summer and fall. The females lay eggs on violets and passion flower. Given the description of your discovery, it appears the caterpillar ate violets.
