Hayhurst's Scallopwing
Staphylus hayhurstii

Observation date: June 21, 2014
Submitted by: Snowdrops
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This individual is out of its range I believe. It is nectaring on False Sunflowers . Weather temp of 88°F and 66% RH... rare this time of year for it to be that humid here.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: I am making this id primarily on the basis of documented species range, but also on the evidence of some checkering on the fringe, primarily on the left side. The Mazans Scallopwing is virtually indistinguishable from Hayhurst's, except in those cases where a checkered fringe is present, in which case it is definitely Hayhursts. However, not all Hayhursts individuals have this checkered fringe, and it can quickly wear off. On this sighting, I see some evidence of checkering on the fringe of the left-side wings(when one enlarges the photos there are at least 3 lighter areas on the fringe, the rest may be worn off). Mazans Scallopwing is typically found only in south TX, though it has been noted to stray to DFW and Houston areas. The text "Butterflies through Binoculars, The East" by Jeffrey Glassberg, p. 152-53, gives a good account of the description of both species and the difficulty of separating Mazans and Hayhursts from photos.
