Observation date: November 06, 2013
Submitted by: Robert Gorman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: They are every right now in southern calif, from mt baldy at 8,000 ft to sea level. not swarming, though we see one every hundred yards or so this one's nectar source was coyote bush, but also mule fat. We had a rain about a month ago so there is some new growth on shrubs but its been a dry year. on this day saw metal mark, cloudless sulphur, sleepy orange, dusky wing, monarchs, queen , another large orange sulphur, not sure of id on it. west coast lady. 85+ for the high mid forties low. last couple weeks butterflies are gone to the roost earlier action slows down around 1400 hrs. good time to shoot if you can find them because they stay still in sun to get warm. most of the painted ladies seem to be on the move, though i'm not sure where there going. this spring there was a steady flow going north, not quite swarms but a steady flow! of lot's and lot's of individuals.
