Nais Tiger Moth
Apantesis nais

Observation date: May 14, 2012
Submitted by: Mary Franceline...
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Moderate light rain, but moth was on the floor of the covered cloister leading to chapel. I saw it as I came up from the car and was struck by its beautiful pattern. I was not moving. After putting my things away and going to the office, about 20 minutes after seeing I went back down with my old Kodak, found the moth still in what seemed same place and took a few pictures. I have trouble holding camera still so they are not as sharp as I would hope. Moth I thought was dead as it did not move. After returning to office and downloading shots, I decided to put camera on a higher speed and see if I could get a sharper shot. Moth had moved a bit away and had slightly opened wings. I took a photo (still not as sharp as I hoped), walked to its other side, took another photo, meanwhile it turned around to face me. As I was trying to get a shot at that angle, it had enough and flew off.

Coordinator notes: Placed under Apantesis nais. This group is highly variable and there a chance this could be another Apantesis species, but A. nais looked the closest.
