Observation notes: Observed flying and landing in a narrow gully in the center of a trail, heavy with spring foliage, alongside an open concrete drainage culvert. This is an area where I have seen these flyers many times, but up until now the weather has not been optimal. The day was on the cool side but sunny. Bit of a breeze. Mostly chaparral growth in the area, transitioning to riparian. This guy is notoriously difficult to spot, as the third picture will attest. Was interacting with an Umber Skipper, so there was mostly aerial combat, but the individual did land a few times and I was able to get a shot or two.
