Gray Buckeye
Junonia grisea

Observation date: October 17, 2023
Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I am seeing a lot of Buckeyes this fall, but nothing prepared me to seeing a bush full of them! I am used to seeing them as solo fliers, guarding sections of flat dirt trail, or resting there in the trail. But there were several individuals sharing what appeared to be a Coyote Bush full of blossoms with (again) several Behr's Metalmarks. The Metalmarks seemed content to sit, wings open, but the Buckeyes flitted around, landing and flying again, but never leaving the plant. I saw little if any territorial behavior. A warm, nearly windless day in a section of trail not far from the riparian section but definitely in open terrain. A lot of other fliers noted that day. There are three Buckeyes together in the third picture.
