Gray Buckeye
Junonia grisea

Observation date: October 15, 2023
Submitted by: Marta Reece
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: A single individual where a stream, currently reduced to a string of puddles, crossed the road resulting in an area of wet sand.
Status: Resident
Verified by: stevecary
Verified date: November 04, 2023
Coordinator notes: our understanding of the various buckeyes changed in last year or two; "Tropical" (evarete) is no longer in our mix. NM has Common (coenia), Gray (grisea) and Dark (nigrosuffusa), plus all kinds of intermediates between them. This individual has the marks of Gray, which occasionally has the reddish tint (maybe a cool season form) that yours shows.
Checklist region(s): United States, New Mexico, Grant County
