Snowberry Clearwing
Hemaris diffinis

Observation date: August 10, 2023
Submitted by: Sherry in Kansas
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I believe these 2 were mating. They flew from my butterfly bush to the ground & were attached together. It was bright sunshine & hot. Would be really interested to know if it's unusual to see this. I know I have never seen it before.

Coordinator notes: I submitted a mating pair from southwest part of Wichita this year, look for the image. I'd never come across this species mating. They were in grass and appeared like two wasps and were nearly stepped on intentionally by myself. Perhaps they prefer to mate in ground rather than higher up like most butterflies. Thank you!
