Horace's Duskywing
Erynnis horatius

Observation date: July 08, 2023
Submitted by: tjay13
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Struggling with this one. I want to say this looks most like Meridian, however that one isn't listed for SF county. So this leads me to Horace's perhaps, looking very similar. Number of Oaks in this transition zone/canyon would seem to support Horace's. These were nectaring rather sticking to the oaks. As would strong July flight, it seemed most of the duskywings that we viewed were of this same species. I'm taking the bluish tone on dorsal HW to be the iridescent spots mentioned in online guide. Seemed very dark brown at the time when observing. Seems the lack of scaling would rule out most other Duskywings (Persius/Afranius/Rocky Mtn). Lacks to spots on ventral FW apex for Rocky Mtn.

Coordinator notes: a fresh male, less contrasty than female. your reasoning seems sound all the way. duskywings challenge everyone. males v females; worn vs fresh; spring vs late summer; dorsal vs ventral marks; we just take what they give us and do the best we can;
