Green Comma
Polygonia faunus

Observation date: June 03, 2023
Submitted by: madamirie
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Warm, very sunny day, low 70s. Many other types of butterflies flying up and down riparian corridor. Not many stopping. This one was perched in a tree. It chased away anything that came close, including numerous large swallowtail butterflies. At one point it found another one just like it and they went spiraling off together. Then returned a few minutes later.

Coordinator notes: I wish you had a photo of the underside but the upperside seems to be a frequent phenotype for a Green Comma and a subspecies of the Green Comma was named "fulvescens" from the Santa Cruz Mts. in 1998. Thanks for providing the actual locality and I would like to publish your record for this in the annual Season Summary (I am the Coordinator for the Western USA). But it would be good to have your actual name to credit for a scientific record. You can contact me at kdavenport93306@yahoo.com. I love Green Commas and they may be the longest lived butterfly with life spans up to about a year...most butterflies only live 9-16 days. Monarchs up to about 8 months...Ken Davenport
