Green Comma
Polygonia faunus

Observation date: October 23, 2022
Submitted by: JNaylen
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Landed or blew down (62km/hr wind gusts) In front of my path/walkway at farmhouse. It seemed to be shaking and reluctant to fly. Brought it inside to warm and it started flying after 5 min. We then released it in a sheltered area of the farm yard. No damage to the wings as far as we could see. Very unusual for this time of year, near zero degrees.
Status: Stray
Verified by: alchem30
Verified date: May 17, 2023
Coordinator notes: The markings clearly match that of the Green Comma (Polygonia faunus) though the area found is just outside of the known resident area just east or north of the sighting location. These species will hibernate over winter if they can find a good sheltering spot. It it quite possible this specimen was blown to this location and is why I have listed it as stray even though it is resident for much of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. If the range has extended from that provided in The Butterflies of Canada then it could become a resident.
