Afranius Duskywing
Erynnis afranius

Observation date: July 16, 2022
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I'm not sure if there's enough for an ID here. I couldn't get a ventral shot, and this one is pretty blurry as well. I'm leaning toward Rocky-mountain, but the fringes do seem a bit too light and there's no small white spot at the end of the upper forewing cell. I'm also intrigued by the striking white band behind the head.

Coordinator notes: Kelly, I've ever seen that white "collar" before, on any duskywing. I wonder of it is something bad, like maybe a fungus? setting that aside, this is Afranius, based on other wing marks. Rocky Mountain is not unreasonable except that it flies in spring; mid-July is too late.
