Five-spotted hawkmoth
Manduca quinquemaculata

Observation date: July 11, 2022
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This large gray moth was perched in the shade of an outcrop in the headwall of Soledad Canyon. Its perch was on shallow flowing water, sufficiently deep that its middle wings were saturated by water. There are large yellow spots bordered by black along its lateral abdomen. The pattern of its thorax bumps and lines is reminiscent of a puppy's face. It is nearly twice as large as the white-lined sphinx which are numerous this summer. The afternoon was hot, humid, under high overcast, and with wind gusts blowing up-canyon.
