One-eyed sphinx
Smerinthus cerisyi

Observation date: May 28, 2021
Submitted by: wilderneyes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Individual was drawn to outside lights, and the temperature was somewhat cool for late May along with a breeze. The insect is large, with a roughly three inch wingspan. The body is robust, round, and curved slightly upwards at the end of the abdomen. The tufts at the end of the abdomen, in conjunction with the somewhat wide antennae, may indicate the individual as male. The hindwings have a single small blue and black eye surrounded by pale pink, lightening towards the edge of the wings. The moth was placid and easily handled, even willing to groom its face and antennae while clinging to a hand, and was not easily discouraged to find a new perch.
