Observation notes: 2 caterpillars found on cold SUV engine when hood was raised. Vehicle was sitting beneath 100+ yr old black walnut tree. Other trees in immediate vicinity: 120+ yr old maple, crab apple. Upon retrieving caterpillars with stick they crawled easily onto it and were contained in a child's insect keeper container on black walnut stick. Fresh maple leaves, dandelion leaves, and grass added to container. 1 caterpillar has remained mostly idle on the stick while the other has searched for an escape route over the course of 6 hrs. Weather: temp mid 60's, mostly sunny, light breeze after 3 days of heavy rain.
