Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found along side of a city park road. Under a ponderosa pine, Weather was sunny, clear, warm (at least 70 F). 5 caterpillars were on one 4-ft tall plant.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: These are Cucullia dorsalis caterpillars, a species of noctuid (not hawkmoth. Good guess, though). They typically use purple-flowered asters such as Machaeranthera sp. as host plants, and the plant you found them on here certainly looks like a tall aster. Thanks for submitting your sighting!
