Gorgone Checkerspot
Chlosyne gorgone

Observation date: May 15, 2019
Submitted by: sam_hartzler
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Looks like a crescent, but white spots on the forewing, and the visible portion of the underwing looks strange.
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: June 01, 2019
Coordinator notes: While closely related to the crescents, this is actually a Gorgone Checkerspot, which tend to be quite common in the Colorado foothills early in the year (usually peaking in May). Although I can tell from your photographs here, in the future, a photograph of the underside is the most surefire way to distinguish between this species and its closest look-alike, the Silvery Checkerspot.
Checklist region(s): United States, Colorado, Fremont County
