Carolina sphinx
Manduca sexta

Observation date: July 25, 2017
Date notes: I found that in just 12 hours half of my tomato plant which was in a hanging basket had been eaten halfway to the dirt! I thought the caterpillar was a curled up leaf and touched it. That's when I realized it was a giant caterpillar. I picked it a tomato to eat and put it in a box of grass I'm growing for fun. How long will it take to chamge to a butterfly? My mom said we can try to keep it.

Observation notes: Sunny and about 90 degrees in Fenton, MO. This caterpillar was devouring my tomato plant. The tomato plant was in a hanging basket 6 feet off the ground to protect it from squirrels. The caterpillar ate the plant half way to the dirt! Two baskets were hanging within two feet of each other. The 2nd plant was not damaged.
