Spear-Marked Black Moth/White-banded Black Moth
Rheumaptera hastata/subhastata

Observation date: August 22, 2011

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Photographed at Sheep Lake, which is near the summit of Chinook Pass (Hwy 410) in Washington State. Elevation is approximately 5600 feet. Sheep Lake is north of the highway about 1/3 of a mile as the crow flies. Due to our cool spring and summer this year, the conditions around the lake were green and lush. The weather that day was mild, with thin cloud covering. Flowers were blooming later than usual. The flower in the picture is a Sitka Valerian. The butterfly didn't dart away immediately upon approach, but didn't tolerate me for long.
