Lupine Blue
Plebejus lupini

Observation date: May 20, 2022
Submitted by: Christian.Nunes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Observed visiting flowers in a wetland. Likely the early-season legume feeder. Andy Warren told me what it fed on, but I can't remember (vetch?).
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Evidently, texanus is demonstrated to be in closer affinity to Icaricia acmon than lupini and I do not know if texanus populations on the eastern plains in Colorado have been demonstrated to use any vetch or other legume host as acmon does in its distribution in the far western U.S. (Baja to B.C.) but as far as I know, the species lupini to which texanus is assigned only uses Eriogonum buckwheats as hosts. I know Paul Opler believe texanus was a distinct species but any further investigation Paul was involved in to continue the pursuit in that direction by him anyway has unfortunately ended with his passing away last week (if you did not already know).
