Aphrodite Fritillary
Speyeria aphrodite

Observation date: July 20, 2022
Submitted by: Merway
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Clear skies, drought conditions, humid, 85 degrees. On a recently bloomed cone flower next to our back porch. Breesport is a very small rural village. This butterfly tested the brown-eyed Susan's nearby but quickly returned to the cone flower; was not attracted to geraniums nearby either.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Hoffman’s Checkerspots are only a West Coast species. Narrowed ventral HW light submarginal band, green-brown eyes, and what I think is a glimpse of a dorsal FW basal spot favors Aphrodite over a Great Spangled and Atlantis. -jmgesell
