Three-lined Leafroller Moth
Pandemis limitata

Observation date: July 07, 2022
Submitted by: dawittrock2231
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Near a floodlight on my deck. I am posting this mostly just to get your thoughts. I am trying to figure out the difference between P. limitata and P. canadana. BG says that canadana may just be a western race of limitata, so maybe my confusion is a result of that (but MPG shows canadana in New Brunswick). It seems that, in general, limitata has straighter lines and canadana more curvy lines, but that isn't consistent. I put this as limitata, because it is reported in Wisconsin and canadana not (although it is reported in Minnesota).

Coordinator notes: I'd go with BG's explanation that P. canadana is considered to be a western race of Pandemis. Apparently a view of the hind wings would help to place to correct species. https://bugguide.net/node/view/1634331 That being said, I agree that this moth does look like P. canadana compared to some of the photos on BG. If you get an ID on iN or BG you can let me know and I'll change the placement.
