Red Admiral
Vanessa atalanta

Observation date: May 21, 2022
Submitted by: sandyleapt
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: One of the few sunny, dry days in May. Near the point where the Hawthorne Trail leaves the summit of Powell Butte and enters the mixed conifer forest that cloak the sides of the butte. Huge nettle patches in filtered and patchy sunlight. Lots of chewed up nettle leaves, just need more sunny days to observe butterflies.. My First sighting of a Red Admiral this year. Feeding on blooming Hawthorne tree.

Coordinator notes: Always nice to see those and to have someone NOT call them Red Admirables like Robert Michael Pyle! That's his thing. We both like Red Admirals and being out in the field together.-Ken Davenport
