Common Buckeye
Junonia coenia

Observation date: August 10, 2020
Submitted by: Harry Forbes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Clear, sunny and hot. Butterfly appeared to be resting in the shade. I don't blame him.
Status: Temporary Colonist
Verified by: mikefisher
Verified date: November 17, 2020
Coordinator notes: There was a sizeable influx of buckeyes this year, especially in eastern Colorado. Some looked mixed between Common Buckeye and the Dark Buckeye (J. nigrosuffusa). This one looks like it may have some of that mixture because the hindwings are darker (the orange band toward the margin is only partly expressed) and the light band on the forewings is smaller and smoky pink instead of boldly white or creamy.
