Mormon Fritillary
Speyeria mormonia

Observation date: August 08, 2020
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Due to the altitude (~12,000 ft), my first guess was a Mormon Fritillary, but the regional coloration shown in Kaufman for the Rockies doesn't look right. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a photo of the underside. Weather was mostly cloudy--sun coming and going. The butterfly "shivered" when not in the sun.

Coordinator notes: Because of the high altitude, your first impression of what this frit is was correct....a paler than average male. It is more usual to find very light colored ones at much lower, forested locations. Most butterflies "shiver" as a means to generate body heat for flight. It's more like friction and not because it is cold. Mike
