Coordinator notes: Several individuals looked at your "black" swallowtail and were unable to come up with a concensus. Probably a black Anise Swallowtail is the most likely. There is a record for a Desert Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes coloro) caterpillarin Ventura County, but Baird's Swallowtail (Papilio machaon bairdii) is far away in the San Bernardino Mountains where those are very rare. I was collecting in inland Ventura County myself today, I live in Bakersfield.-Ken Davenport
