Echo Azure
Celastrina echo

Observation date: May 03, 2020
Submitted by: dbrudin
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I saw many of them throughout a foothill canyon southwest of Colorado Springs. I never got good looks or photos till I reached a woody plant (willow?) which was covered with flies and butterflies where my photographs are from.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Your suggested ID is correct. The flowers it is feeding on are those of the Fragrant Sumac, Rhus aromatica. The taxonomy of the Spring Azure complex is still being sorted out, but C. echo is now generally accepted as the species east of the continental divide in Colorado. West of the continental divide, it is the Northern Azure, C. lucia.
