Observation notes: Flew across a logging road and landed on a perch on willow. I was pursuing a mourning cloak and noticed something "different" about this butterfly. Having net in hand was serendipitous but alas, reflexes took over and I did not get to observe much behavior! I have not seen this species in this area before. Western dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium campylopodum) is present on Bishop pine (Pinus muricata) in nearby habitat, albeit not within the riparian area where I made this observation.

Coordinator notes: Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org about this record. The reason you have not seen this before in Mendocino County is that to my knowledge you are the very first person to find one in that county. I am glad you gave me upperside photos which made ID possible (Callophrys johnsoni is very similar) and geographic location and date, but I do need to know your actual name to publish this record in the annual Season Summary where important records get published, unless I credit -Ken DavenportBAMONA (your name is preferred)-Ken Davenport Side note: I just checked my database, this is the first!
