Saddleback Caterpillar Moth
Acharia stimulea

Observation date: July 27, 2019
Submitted by: Artceedee
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found the caterpillar on a juvenile aloe plant in the ground surrounded by rocks and mulch on the ground and companion aloe, pepper, agave and orange trees. I saw this caterpillar with a load of what I thought were yellow cylindrical eggs on her back. One egg was farther down the plant than the mother, nestled in the blooming center of the aloe plant. When poked lightly the caterpillar starting rocking back and forth but stayed in her position. Two days later at 9:30 am I checked in on the caterpillar and she had deposited all her eggs from her back to the center and protected part of the aloe plant. She is still in a similar position, I suppose keeping watch of her eggs. She herself seemed lethargic, but very much alive.
