Regal Fritillary
Speyeria idalia

Observation date: July 13, 2019
Submitted by: A_baldini
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Weather: Mostly sunny and 77+ degrees. Notes: I was extremely lucky (and surprised) to stumble upon a sizable population of Regal Fritillaries while out on the Pawnee National Grassland. These photos show anywhere from 1-3 individuals (I couldn't tell if it was the same one returning over and over, or separate individuals). In any case, I saw many more at other locations throughout the day.

Coordinator notes: This is one of your more interesting sightings. I am interested to know the location you found these. Is it a seep/wetland or pretty much all dry land? This is of interest because some populations of idalia feed on dryland violets (V. nuttallii), others only found in wetland areas and require a wetland obligate violet. Have you been to Soapstone Natural Area in Larimer County? I think there may be an idalia population there, in addition to Boloria selene. Mike
