Eastern Tent Caterpillar Moth
Malacosoma americanum

Observation date: March 28, 2019
Submitted by: Lovetynjc
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It’s cool outside probably 55-60 His body looks dark brown or black. He has a white or pale yellow stripe straight down his back top to bottom. On either side are what look like black n white eyes - evenly proportion and symmetrical - 10 on each side. At bottom edge of body it almost looks like he’s wearing auburn colored fuzzy boots. He is fuzzy / hairy but more along bottom sides where legs begin. Very lightly fuzzy on top but you have to look on his level to see the hairs. He’s absolutely beautiful looking. I’m curious what kind he is and if he’s ok to touch. He has “found” me 2 days in a row now and hangs out right near me when I’m on our deck. Right now he’s just chillin on the table I’m using and stays right near me. It’s kinda cute unless of course he’s eyeing me ready to sting. Haha I checked one website where you enter dominant features and could not find him anywhere. Please let me know I’d really appreciate it. Thank you. PS: I live on HIlton Head Island, SC
