Observation notes: My kids found a large, plump, bright neon green colored caterpillar in the fall of 2018 just outside our front door in West Springfield, VA. We took it in and set it up in a butterfly terrarium . We guessed it might be a Luna caterpillar. A little later, it transformed into a white chrysalis—and thinking it wouldn’t emerge until the spring, we put the terrarium in the basement and nearly forgot about it. Two days ago we discovered a very large moth had emerged (not sure when this might have happened). Its wingspan is roughly 6 inches, which makes the terrarium seem like too small a habitat for any length of time. What kind of moth is this, and how can we safely release him in the middle of winter?
