Coordinator notes: This is the Northern Checkerspot, Chlosyne palla. It is very similar to the Arachne and Sagebrush checkerspots, but their flight doesn’t begin until late May or early June, and they are also less common in western Colorado. However, the Northern Checkerspot is usually quite abundant due to the widespread distribution of its various host plants: rabbitbrush, goldenrod, and many other asters. A beautiful butterfly, one of my personal favorites.
