Observation notes: I had pulled out a portion of a nonnative azalea yesterday. Today I was looking for a small hand rake in that area, brushing aside leaves. In doing so I discovered this wooly bear underneath the leaves. I wondered if it was alive. I touched it and it curled up. It was alive. I placed the leaves back over it. Later I came back to it to take this picture of it. It had gone back to its uncurled position. I suppose that is the most energy conserving position. I won't disturb again. After I took the picture I covered it with the loose leaves again. Yet another reason to keep portions of the yard "leafed". I've gotten to the point where I only keep the garden paths cleared and parts of the evershrinking lawn as I continue to plant non-lawn plants (The Skippers may be less happy.). I leave the leaves everywhere else. The temperature was probably in the high 40's. The sky was overcast. It will rain tonight and tomorrow.
